Uncommon

Uncommon is the title of one of my favorite songs, lyrically. It speaks of how the world conforms to styles, patterns, and fads, but I, as an artist, beg for the uncommon, unpopular way to go... The songs on this album talk about life, decisions, and the pursuit of contentment.
Oak Palaces ©Kelli CatesThe lyrics can seem a little confusing, but here's the concept. My world revolves around music. Oak palaces with ivory and ebony steps? Pianos, obviously. :) In my life, it all ends with music. God gave us music to explore and create, and that's what I LOVE to do. The siren in the final hook refers to someone's voice singing my songs.

Anthem (Not That Sane) ©Kelli CatesMy sarcastic nature sometimes takes over my lyrics. I have no remorse. If someone has the nerve to tell me that they think I share too much, I just fire back "Guess what? We're all different! My personality involves sharing! So shut up and don't listen if it bothers you!" But since that doesn't rhyme, I created this song. :)

Like a River ©Kelli CatesThis is one of the very FEW times I've ever placed music to a POEM instead of lyrics written specifically to actually be a song. The poem just meant so much to me, and I wanted to portray it through music. I also wanted the music to be as peaceful as I was when I was writing the poem.

The Return of Peace ©Kelli CatesMy husband adores this song. I wrote this for my birth father after meeting him again. It basically talks about how he seemed so familiar to me, even though we hadn't seen each other in two decades. Everything about him just screamed "safe, secure, loved." And so I wrote this song.

Metamorphosis ©Kelli CatesWrote this in 2007, after meeting my biological dad. Life felt so amazing at that point...I was still in newlywed bliss, we were living on our own, I had gained an extra family, and everything just seemed to fall into place...well, blissfully. Hence the "metamorphosis from fear to bliss."

Heat ©Kelli CatesThe meaning of these words can be completely misconstrued. In reality, the whole meaning behind this song is to talk about how our emotions can get a hold of our common sense, and before we know it...BOOM! We're lost in the heat of the moment. :)
